Editorial review:

The rooms here are comfortable, but small. They have interesting designs, though. The staff is great, and there's character all throughout the hotel. The location in the Theater District is great, the rates are okay, and there's an enjoyable and free wine/cheese hour.

Verified Reviews:

  • Free coffee in the morning - Bathroom was surprisingly large - I will definitely stay at the monaco again
  • In-room coffee maker was nearly impossible to use - Beautiful canopy bed - Wine and cheese evenings were special touches
  • Couple of blocks away from union squre - Non working coffee maker - L'occitane freebies were nice
  • Room included a dvd player, stereo - Staff was incredibly friendly - Bed was absolutely fantastic
  • Rooms were very cute - Staff was great - Everything is within walking distance - Free wifi internet

              Location Decor

Hotel Monaco has a great location (as many other hotels nearby does), very nice decor, but the total absence of courtesy of the staff, for an expensive hotel, its almost unbelivable. My wife and I stayed at Hotel Monaco as part of our honeymoon, and, not once has the clerks at the front desk have said "good morning", "welcome"' nor "have a nice day"; not even when we checked in. When arrived we had to carry our own bags because no one was there to help us; the same to open the doors while we where handling the bags. Its a $300 per night hotel, with a staff service of a Motel 6 at its best. Avoid this hotel if you value service

The location is smack in the Theatre District, close to Union Square, and therefore near shopping and entertainment. The hotel is clean and efficient, although no bargain.

Our "junior suite" was not really spacious and because the decor for our room was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane/Starship experience, it came across as tawdry. I suppose European travelers might want to wallow in the S.F. psychedelic legend, but I would have preferred a classic, clean suite. The bathroom was average in luxury. $50 to park my car seemed steep.

Very friendly and helpful staff. We had to bring our car and appreciated the valet service. Beautiful rooms and common spaces. We had room service twice. The meals and service were excellent.

They weren't clear about the wifi service when we checked in, which could have resulted in us paying and unnecessary fee. Also, I have stayed there before and knew to expect a small room, but this was even smaller than I expected. There was no room for a chair other than the desk chair, so one of us had to sit on the bed when we had room service.

Very funky hotel decor in the rooms. Absolutely charming staff. You can ask for a couple of Goldfish for the room - nice to come home to at the end of the day! Beds are phenomenally comfortable. Very handy for Union Square - 5 min walk. The hotel is attached to the Grand Cafe french restaurant and this has a beautiful dining room too. We stayed in a deluxe suite and this was spacious enough, if not enormous.

No tea/coffee facilities in the room...how bizarre, but apparently quite American. The restaurant is quite pricey. The street the hotel on feels safe but only a couple of blocks the wrong way and you find yourself in deepest Tenderloin....not the nicest part of town, albeit okish through the day, I wouldn't like to be there at night. It can be easily avoided though.

Location and silence for down town hotel

Over priced and expensive valet parking (50$/day, really?)

Love Hotel Monacco! Perfect downtown sf location and fun place to stay. Decor is festive and staff very friendly and efficient. Have stayed here twice now and hope to again!

A little pricey for a small room, but decor makes it comfy and nice. Appreciated the 24 hour room service option, but the turkey/club and pizza were not good. However, the fact that food was available late night (2 A.M.) was appreciated!!

Friendly, warm hotel. You always feel very welcome and almost as you are at someones home.

Wine receptions, interesting decor, good facilities and good location for Union Square and moscone conference centre

Could be improved with brighter lighting in the rooms, also tea/coffee making facilities in the room would be a great plus

Location was great, walgreens is right across the street as well. The maids do a pretty darn good job of cleaning your rooms, and they come by daily at around the same time, which is nice. Staff are helpful and polite. Gym is located on the lower level. Although it is very small and basic, there's enough variety; such as treadmills, elipticals, bicycles, jumpropes, one of those huge balls to work out on, a mini trampoline, a bench with a multitude of weights, some mats for pilate/yoga or crunches, and I think I saw one lat machine, but it's got several forms to try from. Ahh, and the cardio machines have mini TVs attached to them! Headphones are provided if sound is desired. Free water is also provided! Gee, I sound very much in love with their gym, don't I? Haha. Oh, and the beds are very comfy with feather pillows and blankets.

Although location is great, it is too noisy...and we were on the very top floor facing away from the streets! Can only imagine the lower levels! And it is a little closer to Tenderloin than I thought (only 3 blocks away, yikes!) Staff are very polite, like they've been scripted. This may not bother some folks but its a little unnerving to me...then again, perhaps they were expecting to be handsomely tipped, so go figure. Toilets are very weak! We booked 2 rooms and both toilets were weak, so go easy on the toilet paper! We had to call for a service man to unclog one of our toilets. Havent tried their cafe/restaurant, so can't comment on it. And no kitchen, booo. But there is a tiny fridge with expensive goodies to tempt you into spending more money! Decor gave me a headache though...green and yellow stripes? Oh dear... Pricing is a little on the expensive side, considering that you can stay at another nearby 4star hotel that is cheaper, with a kitchen included! But despite all this, I would stay here again (and request the top floor facing away from the streets. Totally lucked out on my first stay here, lol).

              Location. Rooms were clean.

Rooms small, older building, odd furnishings, no views. San Francisco has many great hotels but this is not one of them.

Great hotel - feels very luxurious, good staff, and complementary wine hour! Highly recommended. Our second visit and we'll definitely stay there again when in SF.

Rooms could be larger. Area - although only a couple of blocks from Union Square - gets more edgy late at night, but that's how San Francisco works.
